The common approach being taken by many manufactures is that of replacing the conventional steels used in body construction with a range of lightweight materials including new metal alloys, aluminium, composites, and lightweight plastics. However, the use of these alternative materials brings with it a requirement for new levels of flexibility to cater for the different processes and technologies being used.

This is where automatic robot tool changing systems come into their own, where either a component requires multiple processing stages or where different parts need to be gripped and handled through the production line. The ability to be able to quickly and dynamically change processes also provides the agility required to meet the demands of today’s automotive manufacturing sector, where there is a growing trend in certain areas towards a higher mix – lower volume environment which requires on-the-fly tool and process changes.
